The Experience

Explore Tanzania at your own pace

A seven-day Kilimanjaro National Park trek following the scenic Lemosho Route, which the source material identifies as one of the mountain’s most rewarding approaches. The route climbs from rainforest through heath and alpine desert before the final summit attempt, allowing time to experience Kilimanjaro’s remarkable ecological zones rather than simply rushing upward. A licensed guide, mountain crew, and a measured acclimatisation plan support the journey from arrival in Moshi to the descent at Mweka Gate.

Daily Plan

Your journey, day by day

Each day has a clear plan, with enough flexibility to follow wildlife conditions, weather, and your interests.
  1. Day 1

    Kilimanjaro

After a full briefing and gear check in Moshi or Arusha, transfer to Londorossi Gate to complete registration. Drive to the Lemosho trailhead and begin walking through rich montane rainforest, where colobus monkeys and forest birds are often seen. The first camp at Mti Mkubwa is deliberately short, giving you time to settle into the rhythm of the mountain and meet the crew who will support the trek.

    • Airport transfer
    • Mountain hike
Meals: Lunch, DinnerAccommodation: Tented camp · Mti Mkubwa Camp
Hikers resting with Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance
  2. Day 2

    Kilimanjaro

Leave the forest and climb into moorland, where giant heather and volcanic views replace the dense canopy. The route reaches the Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus on the mountain, with the summit massif appearing ahead on clear afternoons. Your guide keeps the pace slow and conversational so that the altitude change is managed carefully.

    • Mountain hike
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, DinnerAccommodation: Tented camp · Shira 1 Camp
Tents at a Kilimanjaro mountain camp
  3. Day 3

    Kilimanjaro

Cross the open Shira Plateau towards the Lava Tower area. Today is designed around the important principle of climbing higher and sleeping lower: you gain altitude during the day, then descend to Barranco Camp beneath its dramatic volcanic wall. The changing terrain offers broad views over the western side of Kilimanjaro and helps your guide assess how everyone is adapting.

    • Mountain hike
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, DinnerAccommodation: Tented camp · Barranco Camp
Climbers at a high-altitude Kilimanjaro camp at sunrise
  4. Day 4

    Kilimanjaro

Start with the Barranco Wall, a hands-on but non-technical scramble that rewards you with wide views across the southern glaciers. Continue across valleys and ridgelines to Karanga Camp, arriving in time for lunch and a quiet afternoon. The shorter distance gives your body time to recover while keeping you high enough for acclimatisation.

    • Mountain hike
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, DinnerAccommodation: Tented camp · Karanga Camp
    Hikers crossing Kilimanjaro’s alpine terrain
  5. Day 5

    Kilimanjaro

Hike steadily to Barafu Camp, the final base before the summit. The landscape is now stark alpine desert, with the summit slopes rising above camp. Arrive early enough to rest, eat, prepare warm layers and headlamps, and receive a detailed overnight briefing from your guide. An early night is essential before the ascent begins shortly after midnight.

    • Mountain hike
    • Rest or free time
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, DinnerAccommodation: Tented camp · Barafu Camp
  6. Day 6

    Kilimanjaro

Begin the summit attempt in the early hours, climbing slowly by headlamp towards Stella Point and then Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point. After time for photographs and the achievement to sink in, descend carefully to Barafu for a short rest before continuing through changing vegetation to Mweka Camp. This is the longest and most demanding day, so your crew will keep the focus on safe pacing, warmth, and hydration.

    • Summit attempt
    • Mountain hike
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, DinnerAccommodation: Tented camp · Mweka Camp
  7. Day 7

    Kilimanjaro

Make the final descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you receive your summit certificate and say goodbye to the mountain crew. A private transfer returns you to Moshi or Arusha for a shower, recovery meal, and onward plans. Your team can also arrange a safari or Zanzibar extension if you would like to continue your Tanzania journey.

    • Mountain hike
    • Departure transfer
    • Optional extension
Meals: Breakfast, LunchAccommodation: End of trip
